Outliers, a story of success is a book on how to make yourself successfull with tips such as, having 10,000 work hours of experience to even just dumb luck. These tips seem a tad strange especially with luck being listed as one of them but he clearly states that these things listed led up to the success of people such as Bill Gates. In the novel he actually gets to interview the computer guru himself. Bill Gates met the 10,000-Hour Rule when he spent 10,000 hours programming his high schools computer in 1968 at the age of 13. In Outliers, Gladwell interviews Gates, who says that unique access to a computer was what helped him become who he is today. Without that access, Gladwell says that Gates would still be "a highly intelligent, driven, charming person and a successful professional", but that he might not be worth the 50 billion dollars he is worth today.
I think that the only thing I would change in this book would be its appeal to younger readers. This book could be an excellent motivator for a person my age to become a successful business man/woman. The number one thing that would put some people off would be the 10,000 hour rule. "10,000 hours!?! that sounds like alot, and I dont think ill ever get to that so why bother." This would be the mindset of many people my age. This quote was derived from my thought on this step. Later i realize that it is cumulative, it takes time. This could mean 5 years to maybe even 10. But once you reach your peak, success has been seized by the entrepeneur.
This book made me look at success a different way, it had some unusual ideas in it but when you though about it, it all came together in a clear and clean package. I learned from the book that success isnt all perservierance, some of it has to do with being in the right place at the right time, waking up in the middle of night with an amazing idea to write it down. These unconventional thigns leading to success can be forgotten or brushed off as things that do not happen in the real world. The person who would benefit from this book would be a young man around my age who was looking to become an entrepeneur. I learned overall that in this world, you need perserverance, smarts and just a little bit of luck to succeed.
